Promote Yourself Personal branding and career book, and the Tim Ferriss effect
Promote Yourself Personal branding and career book, and the Tim Ferriss effect Dan Schawbel finally got his next book out: Promote Yourself. I dont have a copy but there is a lot of info you can find in blog posts online (like this one from LinkedIn global spokeswoman Lindsey Pollak). Dan will be on Octobers Ask The Expert call on Oct 1. Join us here, and send me any questions you have for the call. Dan has done a masterful job promoting himself. Ive watched his career/business blossom over the years. I even shared the stage with him in North Carolina (Charlotte). It was the one and only time weve met in person. Tim Ferriss tweeted a link to a post Dan wrote: Apparently it took Dans website down. That is a big deal. I used to crave mentions like hot superstars like that, tweeting and blogging about my stuff Dan has worked very hard to get the attention he is getting. Im guessing this is a personal branding + career smarts + generational stuff (Dan is a big Gen Y advocate) book if that sounds like your cup of tea, check it out here. Where I am on 911
Where I am on 9/11 Every year I write about 9/11. Because I was there. But this year, I didnt want to. But then I woke up today and decided that I want to. I didnt want to write about it because Im sick of it. I dont want to keep identifying with it. I think maybe I needed to when I didnt feel like I really belonged on a farm and I didnt feel like I belonged in New York and I needed some way to explain to myself how I got to where I am lost. But Im not lost now. My kids ask me about 9/11. Their questions remind me of how I would ask my parents during the Vietnam war, What is Viet Cong?, which is a similar question to Was there one plane or two?. I answer their questions. And they are prying often enough that I tell my story more now than ever. So I probably dont need to keep telling the story on this blog. (Although there are some 9/11 posts that I love to link to, like a seasonal ritual. Heres one.) I woke up late this morning. Because I took a sleeping pill. Its the type of pill that was designed specifically for post-traumatic stress so I dont wake up in the middle of the night from nightmares. I wouldnt know when I need that pill if it hadnt been for the 9/11 PTSD counselor who told me my childhood was way worse for me than 9/11. I woke up this morning thinking that there is no way to separate myself from 9/11. The urge to not write about it reminds me of the urge people have to quit one blog to start another, which is really the urge to not have to deal with a part of oneself. For all of you who are planning to write to me to ask if you should quit one blog and start another, let me tell you that its much more meaningful to understand how the two types of blogging belong together. Because both types of writing are part of you. And the process shows you how you become an integrated person. Its always better for you to be able to integrate different parts of yourself with a story. Stories are how we make ourselves whole. Elie Wiesel wrote, God made man because he loves stories. I dont know if the he is God or the he is man. But either way, I like that Wiesel makes stories the focus of the creative act. Wiesel got through the Holocaust by telling stories, which tells me we can get through anything by telling stories. So none of us should stop talking about major events because they are too hard, or because we cant make sense of them. Both reasons are when its most important to keep spinning stories. This reminds me of how every time I hear that someone quits therapy because they arent making progress, I know they really quit therapy because its very hard to talk about ourselves if we cant tell a story of how we got there. Ive written about how this is true in a resume. If you cant tell the story of how you got to where you are, you are unlikely to convince someone to hire you. We connect to the world by telling the story of ourselves. The stories we tell are a window into our personalities. Dan P. McAdams says in Handbook of Personality: Whether aimed at finding meaning in yesterdayâs conversation around the water cooler or in a 15-year marriage that ended two decades ago, autobiographical reasoning is an exercise in personal integrationâ"putting things together into a narrative pattern that affirms life meaning and purpose. I cant make sense of my own life without including 9/11. Im tired of talking about it. But that just means I need to start talking about it in a different way. My story can change. Our stories always change. They dont go away. So, this year, my story is that I probably always knew, somewhere in the back of my mind, that I belonged in a rural setting. But it took 9/11 to get me to see that clearly enough to take action. Today I am fortunate to be where I belong. That story might change, but I hope my story always ends with me feeling like Im where I belong.

Social Media 101 is coming to Chicagoland!
Social Media 101 is coming to Chicagoland! You may have noticed that Matt Cheuvront of lifewithoutpants.com and I hang out a lot online. It all started over a meeting about this very website. Since then, our friendship has grown and so has our list of co-projects. Today we are announcing our first official project- Social Media 101. We will be hosting social media workshops in the Chicagoland area to educate small businesses, entrepreneurs and non-profits how to get more out of their marketing while spending less money. Since we love the online space and have experienced serious growth because of it, we thought we should let others experience the same thing. The workshop will be held on Saturday April 10 from 9am-1pm in Elgin, IL. We are offering the workshop for FREE because in this economy, small businesses need to stretch their dollar as much as they can. Social Media can change a small business. Yet small business owners are usually the ones wearing so many hats that they dont have time to think about learning social media basics too. After leaving our workshop, attendees will be equipped with the confidence and knowledge to have the voice of a large company with the marketing budget of a small company. We will provide new ideas that are crucial to todays small business marketing strategy. Dont believe it? We know it sounds far fetched for those who are new to the space. Therefore, Mari Luangrath of Foiled Cupcakes will be sharing how social media has played an instrumental role in her business. Its no accident that Foiled Cupcakes are Chicagos most coveted cupcakes. Not only are they delicious, but Mari has relied on social media and online marketing to create the buzz. Shell be sharing her story and answering all of your questions. Also, Matt and I will are co-authoring a âSocial Media 101? e-book which will be 100% FREE for all attendees. The e-book includes some of our best practices and case studies from small business owners. Weâre not reinventing the wheel here, but are instead focusing on providing a tangible resource to all workshop attendees and anyone else interested in learning more about Social Media. Im pretty excited to give back to my hometown community by doing something Im passionate about. Plus, working with Matt Cheuvront is an honor. Our meetings are just as fun as they are productive (and trust me they are really fun!). I imagine the workshop will be the same way. Matt knows his stuff, he has a knack for design, and he knows from experience what works and what doesnt work when it comes to small business marketing. For those of you who are in the Chicagoland area, please pass this info on to anyone you know who may benefit from our free workshop! You can register using the form below or here.

5 Tips to find the best professional resume writer - Sterling Career Concepts
5 Tips to find the best professional resume writer 5 Tips to find the best professional resume writer Whether youâre visiting my site for the first time (welcome!) or if youâre a loyal reader of my blog (thank you!), I wanted to take the opportunity to revisit my recommendations on how to best select a professional resume writer. First of all, itâs an investment in your career, in your job search, and in yourself. A trusted colleague Mary Elizabeth Bradford wrote a savvy post on price points and the presence of online resume mills . Her post was first published back in 2010, but her points are still valid today. Hiring a professional resume writer is not an instance when you can go with the lowest bid. You will see a difference in quality. Several factors to consider when deciding to partner with a professional resume writer: Industry Certifications. Three of the leading professional associations are Career Directors International (CDI), Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches (PARW/CC), and National Association of Resume Writers (NARW). Look for a certification from at least one association. These can be verified through these associationâs websites. Some certifications are more difficult to achieve while others require a continuing education component to maintain, but all certifications do reflect a commitment to upholding professional standards. Published and Award-winning Work. A writerâs work being selected for publication in one or more career books reflects the quality of the work product. Being nominated or receiving an industry award such as the Toast of the Resume Industry (TORI) awards shows the writerâs work has been selected blindly by their peers as the best of the best. Continuing Education Efforts. Does the writer maintain memberships and/or involvement in industry associations? Has he/she attended industry conferences and seminars? Resume writing is an ever-evolving craft. Staying at the top of your game requires a commitment to continuing education. Social Media Presence. Itâs 2012. If a writer does not have some combination of a strong website, a Facebook page, a Twitter handle, a LinkedIn account, a Google+ profile, or a Pinterest page, it may reflect a disconnect with present-day marketing efforts. This may be perceived as more or less of a deficit depending on your career field. Positive Rapport. Speak with any writer before you hire him or her. Be sure you are comfortable talking with him or her, and that you walk away with a good gut feeling in his or her talent and abilities. When done effectively, working with a writer to develop new career documents is a collaborative, creative process. Rapport, trust, and respect are pivotal in its success. I would be happy to speak with you about your career direction, and any documents and career strategies you may require to achieve your career goals in 2013.

What Should a Staff Accountant Resume Contain?
What Should a Staff Accountant Resume Contain?A staff accountant resume will be one of the most important pieces of business marketing material a business could have. The success of the business is directly linked to how much time and effort goes into finding, training, and employing the right people to get the job done. A staff accountant resume should be as important as the person's qualifications and experience in order to get hired.A staff accountant resume will not only be used for employment purposes. It will also be used to create a list of references. If a client has a staff accountant with a stellar resume, they will likely be looking for someone similar within their company. With the use of a great resume, it can greatly increase a business' chances of hiring a great candidate. There are plenty of benefits to having a great resume, but there are also a few bad things about having a sub-par one. One thing that many people do not realize is that some employers look at an accou ntant's past work experience. They may take a potential employee's skills and responsibilities and their current skills and responsibilities and work them to come up with an overall assessment of the candidate. A good staff accountant resume should show all the relevant experiences and skills an employer is seeking in a potential employee. This means that the person's skills and abilities are more than just the sum of their work experience. An experienced and well qualified staff accountant will do everything possible to prepare their resume. They will keep it short and sweet and very organized. A poorly prepared resume could cause the person to be overlooked for a job opportunity because it does not provide enough information about a candidate. When a potential employer sees a poor resume, they will get the impression that the candidate is not committed to getting hired. It could also cause a potential employer to pass over a qualified candidate due to the lack of important informati on on the resume. A professional staff accountant will make sure the person they are considering hires to fill the position has a great resume and has put some serious thought into making it.A good staff accountant will also follow up with a potential employee after they have been hired. This will help the business to keep track of things throughout the hiring process. This can lead to the hiring of more people or can help with employee retention by helping create a positive working atmosphere for the new employees. One other benefit of keeping track of the hiring process is that it will help a potential employer to narrow down their search for potential employees. A company can take a look at all the different resumes they receive from potential employees. These resumes will show all of the different things a potential employer may be looking for in a potential employee. By sorting through these different resumes, the potential employer can narrow their search down to the best candi date that fits what they are looking for.In order to write a staff accountant resume, the person can use a resume writing service. These companies will use the person's past work experience, academic qualifications, and other skills and qualifications to write the perfect resume. If the potential employer sends out a resume via email, the staff accountant service can send out a custom written resume. No matter what format the person is looking for, there is likely a professional service that can write a great staff accountant resume for them.
